Rockies-Cubs Preview 2008-05-31

Rockies-Cubs Preview 2008-05-31
The last time the Chicago Cubs entered June with the best record in baseball was 1908 - the same year they won their most recent World Series.

That will be the case again when the Cubs look for a seventh straight victory to finish a perfect homestand as they conclude their four-game set with the reeling Colorado Rockies on Sunday.

One day after rallying from two eight-run deficits, Chicago (35-21) erased an early two-run hole to beat Colorado 5-4 on Saturday to improve 6-0 on the homestand and 25-8 at Wrigley Field.

Chicago, which has won seven in a row overall at Wrigley, hasn't swept a homestand of at last five games since June 12-16, 1992.

"It's been fun for us," Saturday's winning pitcher Ryan Dempster said. "We got to keep it going."

The Cubs finished 18-11 in May - including 14-3 at home - and own the majors' best overall mark heading into June for the first time since the 1908 club was a league-best 23-13 at the same point.

"We got ourselves in good position," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "But best record, I don't look at those things."

Chicago trailed 2-0, but Alfonso Soriano's two-run homer highlighted a three-run second inning. Soriano went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to close out May hitting .345 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs during the month.

Rookie Sean Gallagher (2-1, 4.50 ERA) looks for a second straight strong outing for the Cubs on Sunday. He allowed a run and four hits in a career-high seven innings of a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

"He's still got a couple things to work on, but he's telling us that he wants to stay in the rotation," said Piniella of Gallagher, who will make his fifth straight start and first against Colorado.

In his only other appearance against the Rockies, the right-hander allowed four runs in two-thirds of an inning in a 15-2 loss at Colorado on Aug. 11.

The Rockies (20-36), who were swept in a three-game set by Philadelphia earlier this week, turn to Ubaldo Jimenez (1-5, 5.37) to help avoid a season-high seventh consecutive loss overall and extending their franchise-high 11-game road losing streak.

Colorado is 8-22 away from home in 2008.

"It's hard to figure out. Poor execution. All phases of the game, we're just not doing enough to win," Colorado first baseman Todd Helton said of the team's struggles.

Jimenez, 0-4 in his last nine starts since beating Atlanta on April 8, allowed seven runs and 10 hits in four innings of a 7-4 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday.

The right-hander is 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA in two starts against Chicago.

Helton homered for the second straight game to extend his hitting streak to seven games in which he's batting .381 (8-for-21) with six RBIs.

The Rockies could be without outfielder Ryan Spilborghs he suffered a bruised left wrist Saturday when he was hit by a pitch in the third inning. He is batting .315 this season and has hit three of his four home runs over his last six games.
