Colorado Rockies Roster Report 2009-05-16

Colorado Rockies Roster Report 2009-05-16
--1B Todd Helton went 1-for-4, reaching base on a single up the middle in the third which 2B Freddy Sanchez knocked down. Helton needs two hits to reach 2,000.

--RHP Huston Street has made nine straight scoreless appearances, covering eight innings, and hasn't allowed a run in 10 of his past 11 and 11 of his past 13 games.

--3B Garrett Atkins, who went 0-for-3, has one hit in his past 29 at-bats and is batting .193. Manager Clint Hurdle put Atkins back in the cleanup spot for the first time since May 4 but in the ninth pinch hit left-handed hitting Ian Stewart for Atkins against RH closer Matt Capps.

--RF Brad Hawpe went 2-for-4, raising his average to .363. He has driven in at least one run in five consecutive games and seven of his past eight and has 30 RBI this season.

--SS Troy Tulowitzki, who returned to the lineup after being hit with a pitch on the left elbow Wednesday night, went 2-for-4 and has had two hits in five of his past six games, going 10-for-22 in that stretch to raise his average to .250.

--LHP Randy Flores was brought up from Class AAA Colorado Springs to replace LHP Glendon Rusch, designated for assignment. Flores, who turns 34 in July, went 0-2 with a 5.51 ERA in 15 games with the Sky Sox, having allowed 16 hits and five walks with 13 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings. Seven of Flores' past 10 outings were scoreless, but his last appearance was a struggle -- one inning Tuesday against Iowa in which Flores allowed five hits and five runs, four earned, in the Sky Sox's 16-15 win in 10 innings.

--LHP Glendon Rusch was designated for assignment. Rusch, 34, went 2-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 11 games and allowed 35 hits in 18 2/3 innings. He relieved Jason Marquis in the fourth inning Wednesday against the Astros, gave up a three-run double to Geoff Blum on his first pitch that increased Houston's lead to 9-3 and was strafed for 12 hits and six runs in 2 2/3 innings. Opponents hit .398 against Rusch with right-handed hitters batting .406 (28-for-69) and left-handers averaging .368 (7-for-19).

MEDICAL WATCH:

SS Troy Tulowitzki (left elbow contusion, sore left shin) left the May 13 game, and he didn't play May 14. He expects to play May 15.

INF Jeff Baker (sprained left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27.

LHP Franklin Morales (strained left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 22. He threw a bullpen session May 9.

RHP Ryan Speier (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He threw a bullpen session April 27, and he began a rehab assignment with Class A Modesto on May 13.

RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 22. He was throwing in extended spring training in early May, hoping to avoid season-ending Tommy John surgery.

LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
