Rockieshome.com | Colorado Rockies News, rockies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --INF Omar Quintanilla made his first start of the season in the Rockies' 30th game. He had previously appeared in nine games, going 2-for-10 overall and 1-for-6 as a pinch hitter. Manager Clint Hurdle joked about why he gave Quintanilla the start at 2B. "His mother called and said she wanted him to start," Hurdle said. "It's Mother's Day, and I'm all for doing what mothers ask." Quintanilla went 0-for-3 with a walk.
--RF Brad Hawpe has been on base in each of his past 14 starts. Since coming back from a neck contusion that caused him to miss three starts April 28-May 1, Hawpe is 10-for-29 with two doubles, two homers and four RBIs. The left-handed hitting Hawpe has hit three of his four homers this season against left-handed pitchers. --SS Troy Tulowitzki has three straight multi-hit games (6-for-11) and seven RBIs in his past seven games after no RBIs in his previous 17 games. Tulowitzki hit his fifth homer of the season May 10, four of which have come with the bases empty.
--LHP Jorge De La Rosa struck out a career-high 12 on Saturday, finishing two short of the club record 14 set by Darryl Kile on Aug. 20, 1998, at Montreal. Shawn Chacon struck out 13 against Houston on June 7, 2001. De La Rosa's 12 strikeouts were a franchise record for a lefty. The old record of 10 was shared by Brian Bohanon on Aug. 28, 1999, against the Phillies, Jeff Francis on Sept. 18, 2007, against the Dodgers and De La Rosa on May 19, 2008, against the Indians, with 10 being his previous career high.
MEDICAL WATCH:
INF Jeff Baker (sprained left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27.
LHP Franklin Morales (strained left shoulder) went on the 15-day disabled list April 22. He threw a bullpen session May 9.
RHP Ryan Speier (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He threw a bullpen session April 27.
RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 22. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.
LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
