Colorado Rockies Roster Report 2009-05-06
The bullpen is again in flux with Huston Street regaining the closer's role, Manuel Corpas going back to the middle of the game -- and maybe the minors -- and manager Clint Hurdle left to mix and match with RHPs Jason Grilli and Matt Belisle and LHP Alan Embree in the seventh and eighth. In games decided in the seventh inning or later, the Rockies were 0-7 through May 3, which was also indicative of their inability to get a big hit.

--LHP Alan Embree made his 859th career appearance Tuesday, passing Charlie Hough and moving into 31st place all time. Embree has appeared in 13 of the Rockies' 25 games.

--1B Todd Helton extended his hitting streak to eight games and has had two or more hits in seven of his past eight and 10 of his past 13 games. During his hitting streak, Helton is 15-for-30 to raise his average to .341. Helton has 58 career hits at Petco Park, the most for any active visiting player.

--C Chris Iannetta has gone deep on six of his 12 hits this season. He tied the game at 1 with a leadoff homer in the eighth inning Tuesday, and he put the Rockies ahead 9-6, which proved to be the final score, with a grand slam Monday.

--UT Ian Stewart made his eighth start at second base. He has also made two starts in left field, two at third base and one in right field. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and has two hits in his past 26 at-bats with eight strikeouts, dropping his average to .218 (12-for-55).

--CF Dexter Fowler made an impact in April, but it wasn't enough to win National League Rookie of the Month. That honor went to Cardinals OF Brian Barden, who hit .385 with three homers and seven RBIs in 21 April games. Fowler finished the month at .290 with two homers and seven RBIs in 18 games and led the league with nine stolen bases, including five against the Padres on April 27.

--LHP Greg Smith (left shoulder fatigue) threw five innings Monday in an extended spring training game and kept his velocity at 87 mph.

INF Jeff Baker (sprained left wrist) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 27.

LHP Franklin Morales (strained left lat) went on the 15-day disabled list April 22.

RHP Ryan Speier (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He threw a bullpen session April 27.

RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 22. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.

LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
