Rockieshome.com | Colorado Rockies News, rockies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The bullpen was not effective in the season's first two weeks, in particular Huston Street, who lost his closing job to Manuel Corpas. Additional struggles by Matt Belisle and Alan Embree, and the elbow injury that knocked Taylor Buchholz out of action, left a glaring late-inning weakness.
PLAYER NEWS: --2B Clint Barmes has no walks in 40 plate appearances, a reason his on-base percentage is a paltry .275 despite a presentable .256 batting average. But this isn't much of a surprise. Last year, Barmes hit .290 but had just 17 walks in 417 plate appearances and a .322 on-base percentage, which raised his lifetime mark slightly to .301.
--3B Garrett Atkins is 4-for-20 in his past five games. During that span he's hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position, and overall this season, he's 3-for-21 with runners in scoring position. The latter statistic is reminiscent of last year, when Atkins led the team in at-bats with runners in scoring position but struggled in those situations, hitting .225 (42-for-187).
--RHP Aaron Cook, who starts Friday against the Dodgers, has worked just 12 1/3 innings in three starts, lasting four or fewer in two of them. He allowed three homers in his last start Saturday at Los Angeles, just the fifth time in his career he has allowed three homers in a start and the first time since May 30, 2008, at Chicago. Cook has yielded five homers this year after allowing 13 in 211 1/3 innings last season.
--RF Brad Hawpe is 7-for-20 with one double, one triple, two homers and seven RBIs in his past six games. Nine of Hawpe's 13 hits have gone for extra bases, and he has nearly as many walks (seven) as strikeouts. As a result, Hawpe has a .404 on-base percentage and a .614 slugging percentage.
--SS Troy Tulowitzki is hitless in his past 11 at-bats and is 4 for his past 31. He drew a career-high three walks April 8 and accumulated six walks in his first six games but hasn't drawn a walk since then.
--C Chris Iannetta is 3-for-31 with 12 strikeouts. Two of his three hits are home runs. He's 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
--OF Ryan Spilborghs went 4-for-5 Wednesday in a 2-0 loss at Arizona. Only one other player in the majors in the past four seasons had four or more hits in a game in which his team was shut out, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Minnesota's Alexi Casilla went 4-for-4 in a 5-0 loss to Cleveland on Sept. 3, 2007.
MEDICAL WATCH:
LHP Franklin Morales (strained left lat) went on the 15-day disabled list April 22.
RHP Ryan Speier (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19.
RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 22. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.
LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
