Colorado Rockies Roster Report 2009-04-23
The bullpen was not effective in the season's first two weeks, in particular Huston Street, who lost his closing job to Manuel Corpas. Additional struggles by Matt Belisle and Alan Embree, and the elbow injury that knocked Taylor Buchholz out of action, left a glaring late-inning weakness.

--OF Ryan Spilborghs went 4-for-5 Wednesday, equaling his career high for hits in a game. He also had four hits last season on July 4 against the Marlins.

--In his past two starts, LHP Jorge De La Rosa is 0-1 and has allowed 11 hits and eight walks in 12 innings with 11 strikeouts and just two runs allowed. When he pitched 6 2/3 innings Wednesday, it was the first time a Rockies starter had pitched into the seventh in six games, since RHP Jason Marquis went seven innings April 15 at Chicago.

--To clear a spot on their 40-man roster for RHP Matt Daley, the Rockies moved RHP Taylor Buchholz from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list. Hence, Buchholz, who is sidelined with a partial tear of a ligament in his right elbow, is ineligible to return until May 26.

--RHP Jason Hammel will replace LHP Franklin Morales in the rotation and start Monday against the Padres at Coors Field. The Rays stretched Hammel out to start in spring training before trading him to the Rockies on April 5 because he was out of options. Hammel, who said his preference is starting, has made three multi-inning relief appearances with the Rockies, throwing a high of 54 pitches April 11, and last worked Monday, going two innings at Arizona. Referring to Hammel's upcoming start, manager Clint Hurdle said, "I'm not going to put a pitch number on it. He's going to get the opportunity, and I think he'll be able to give us some distance."

LHP Franklin Morales (strained left lat) went on the 15-day disabled list April 22.

RHP Ryan Speier (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19.

RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 22. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.

LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
