Colorado Rockies Roster Report 2009-04-22

Colorado Rockies Roster Report 2009-04-22
The bullpen was not effective in the season's first two weeks, in particular Huston Street, who lost his closing job to Manuel Corpas. Additional struggles by Matt Belisle and Alan Embree, and the elbow injury that knocked Taylor Buchholz out of action, left a glaring late-inning weakness.

PLAYER NEWS:

--LHP Franklin Morales returned to the Rockies but pitched only two innings at Arizona. He suffered a strained left shoulder while warming up in the third and left the game. Morales, who was listed as day-to-day, gave up three hits and two runs on back-to-back homers by Chris Young and Eric Byrnes to start the second.

Morales had been recalled Tuesday and made his first start for the Rockies since April 8 at Arizona, where he allowed one run in six innings. The Rockies sent him to Class AAA Colorado Springs, where he pitched six scoreless innings April 15, and brought him back to face the Diamondbacks when they finally needed a fifth starter.

--RHP Matt Belisle, who entered the game with one out and a runner on first in the fifth the Rockies trailing 6-3, retired the five batters he faced and ended up the winning pitcher. In his previous two outings, Belisle had allowed seven hits and seven runs in one-third of an inning.

--1B Todd Helton had his second consecutive multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, two on a homer. It was Helton's first homer since June 10 last season at Coors Field, when he hit a two-run shot against San Francisco's Vinnie Chulk.

--RHP Manuel Corpas earned his first save since April 19, 2008, at Houston.

--To make room on the roster for LHP Franklin Morales, the Rockies placed RHP Ryan Speier on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Sunday with a strained left hamstring. Speier is 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA in five games and has allowed six hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. He has been scored upon in his past two appearances. Speier has retired just one of the five first batters he has faced and has allowed the four runners he has inherited to score.

Speier had a very good spring but said his hamstring began hurting about 10 days before the start of the regular season. "It got to the point where it was affecting my delivery. ... I'm much more upright, and I wasn't staying down through my pitches because I'm favoring it so much," he said.

--SS Troy Tulowitzki, who entered the game defensively in the eighth, was not in the lineup after starting the first 12 games. He was 4-for-26 with nine strikeouts and was hitless in eight at-bats with runners in scoring position in his past five games.

--INF Omar Quintanilla, who entered the game on a double switch in the fifth, doubled in the sixth for his first hit of the season. He went 1-for-3 after getting four pinch-hit at-bats in the Rockies' first 12 games.

--Class AA Tulsa LHP Keith Weiser was named Texas League pitcher of the week for April 13-19. He made two starts during the week and had 14 strikeouts and one walk while allowing one run in 11 1/3 innings.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Franklin Morales (strained left shoulder) left the April 21 game. He is day-to-day.

RHP Ryan Speier (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19.

RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will miss at least the first month of the season. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.

LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
