--Nine of RF Brad Hawpe's 10 hits have gone for extra bases. He doubled and hit his second homer of the season Sunday off LHP Scott Elbert of the Dodgers -- both Hawpe's homers have come against lefties. He also has one triple and six doubles.
Hawpe's homer Sunday was his 18th career home run against the Dodgers, which is twice as many as he has hit against any other team. He has nine against the Diamondbacks, No. 2 on his list. He went 4-for-9 in the three-game series at Dodger Stadium and is hitting .341 there in his career and .350 against the Dodgers overall.
Dodgers manager Joe Torre finds it enjoyable in a way to watch Hawpe hit. "(Hitting coach Don) Mattingly was impressed with the lift he gets on his swing," Torre said. "It's what Ted Williams would talk about, not an uppercut, but a lift in the swing. I was always told you were supposed to hit down on the ball, but Ted walked about the lift, and Hawpe has that."
--RHP Aaron Cook lasted just four innings in his April 18 start at Los Angeles, but that gave him a franchise-best 942 innings for his career. He passed RHP Jason Jennings (941).
--LHP Franklin Morales will be recalled to start at Arizona on Tuesday, when the Rockies need a fifth starter. He held the Diamondbacks to four hits and one run in six innings April 8 with one walk and six strikeouts and won 9-2. The Rockies wanted Morales to work regularly, so they optioned him to Class AAA Colorado Springs, where he made one start April 15 and allowed two hits in six scoreless innings against Reno with five walks and four strikeouts.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will miss at least the first month of the season. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.
LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
