Rockieshome.com | Colorado Rockies News, rockies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The Rockies made room on their opening-day roster for 3B/LF/2B Ian Stewart, who turned 24 on April 5 and has impact power, and speedy CF Dexter Fowler, 23, the team's best outfielder and a potential base-stealer even though he hasn't learned to use his speed. Both players are key parts of the Rockies' future.
PLAYER NEWS: --OF Seth Smith was 1-for-12 with five strikeouts, including three Saturday night, and wasn't in the lineup. Manager Clint Hurdle said, "He's a good hitter. He's not in a comfortable place right now. I truly believe Seth will put things back in order. You don't see him strike out three times in a game very often." Smith pinch-hit in the sixth Sunday and grounded out to second on the first pitch.
--The Rockies have hit at least one home run in each of their first six games (and a total of 12 overall). The club record for consecutive games with a home run to start the season is 12 games in 1997.
--SS Troy Tulowitzki, who is 5-for-19 with three home runs and five RBIs, leads the team with six walks, including a career-best three walks April 7 at Arizona and has a .440 on-base percentage. Tulowitzki's five-game hitting streak ended Sunday when he went 0-for-3 with a walk. He made the final out of the game, grounding to second against Phillies closer Brad Lidge.
--LHP Jorge De La Rosa reverted to form in his 2009 debut April 10. Losing focus has been a problem with De La Rosa, who gave up five runs, all with two outs in 4 2/3 innings against the Phillies. Particularly bothersome was the three-run third. De La Rosa threw only 27 pitches in the first two innings and had two outs on nine pitches in the third. He needed 23 pitches to get the next out, only one of which was thrown to Ryan Howard, whose double to left-center drove in three runs.
--C Chris Iannetta was rested Saturday and then went 0-for-3 Sunday and was hit by a pitch. However, on his final at-bat, Iannetta flied to deep center field, a possible indication of better at-bats ahead. Manager Clint Hurdle said hitting coach Don Baylor has been working with Iannetta "trying to get him on top of the ball a little bit better, get him in a little better position at the point of contact to square the ball up better."
--Switch-hitting CF Dexter Fowler led off the second with his second homer of the season, his second career home run and his first batting left-handed. Fowler's homer came against RHP Chan Ho Park. His homer batting right-handed came on the first pitch of the game from Diamondbacks LHP Doug Davis on April 8.
--Five of RF Brad Hawpe's six hits this season are doubles, tying him for the team lead with Ryan Spilborghs.
--RHP Jason Hammel made his Rockies debut Saturday and threw 54 pitches while working 2 2/3 innings of relief and allowing five hits and two runs. It was Hammel's longest relief outing since Aug. 14, 2008, when he worked 2 2/3 innings for Tampa Bay at Oakland.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will miss at least the first month of the season. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.
LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
