Rockieshome.com | Colorado Rockies News, rockies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - The Rockies made room on their opening-day roster for 3B/LF/2B Ian Stewart, who turned 24 on April 5 and has impact power, and speedy CF Dexter Fowler, 23, the team's best outfielder and a potential base-stealer even though he hasn't learned to use his speed. Both players are key parts of the Rockies' future.
PLAYER NEWS: --CF Dexter Fowler led off the game with a home run, the 11th time a Rockies player has opened a game on the road with a home run, and the first since Jamey Carroll against the Cubs' Juan Mateo at Wrigley Field on Sept. 30, 2006. It's the fourth time it has happened in Arizona. As well as Fowler off Doug Davis on Wednesday, Neifi Perez went deep off Randy Johnson on May 15, 1999; Jorge Piedra off Russ Ortiz on Aug. 24, 2004, and Kazuo Matsui off Claudio Vargas on Sept. 16, 2006.
--Back-to-back home runs on Wednesday by Yorvit Torrealba and Ian Stewart in the seventh off Billy Buckner, along with back-to-back home runs by Troy Tulowitzki and Chris Iannetta off Brandon Webb in the fourth inning Monday gave the Rockies back-to-back home runs in the same series for the first since 2004. That season against the Giants at Coors Field, Matt Holliday and Todd Greene connected off Felix Rodriguez on July 16, and on July 18, Jeromy Burnitz and Preston Wilson connected off Matt Herges.
--INF Ian Stewart, 8-for-34 as a pinch hitter before this season, is 2-for-2 this year with two RBIs and a home run, which he hit off Arizona RHP Billy Buckner on Wednesday.
--SS Troy Tulowitzki walked three times in a game Wednesday for the first time in his career.
MEDICAL WATCH:
RHP Taylor Buchholz (partial tear in right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will miss at least the first month of the season. The Rockies are being very cautious with Buchholz, trying to make sure the partial tear doesn't become a full-blown one and require Tommy John surgery that would sideline Buchholz for about a year.
LHP Jeff Francis (left shoulder surgery in February 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list April 5. He likely will miss the entire season. Recovery time ranges from six to 12 months, meaning it's possible Francis could pitch in September but not very likely.
