Colorado Rockies Roster Report 2008-10-19
The focus for the Rockies will be to add a middle-of-the-rotation starting pitcher and speed. The speed could come in center field or at second base. The Rockies need another starter, and manager Clint Hurdle said they want to add someone who will be good enough to keep LHP Jorge De La Rosa in the fifth starter role. They do have center field and second base options in house, but they could adjust their thinking if they find a speed guy.

BIGGEST NEEDS: The rotation was an early-season mess in 2008. The Rockies counted on a pitcher on the rebound, which worked in the past but didn't work this time. As a result, they want to go into 2009 more assured of what they have. They feel comfortable with four potential starters -- RHP Aaron Cook, LHP Jeff Francis, RHP Ubaldo Jimenez and De La Rosa. They are hopeful that eventually RHP Jason Hirsh, RHP Greg Reynolds and LHP Franklin Morales will be ready, but when they might be ready in 2009 is uncertain, so they would rather have a surplus than go through the problems of early 2008.

FREE AGENTS: LHP Brian Fuentes, OF Scott Podsednik, RHP Livan Hernandez, RHP Matt Herges, LHP Glendon Rusch

The Rockies will offer arbitration to Fuentes and would be happy if he accepted, but they are expecting him to get an offer to go elsewhere that they won't match, and so they will accept two draft picks as compensation. They will make an effort to re-sign Podsednik in a backup role, but with the expectation of getting him more playing time. They also want to keep Rusch, who would be a swingman.

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: 3B Garrett Atkins, OF Willy Taveras, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Jason Grilli, RHP Taylor Buchholz, C Adam Melhuse, 2B Clint Barmes.

Atkins and Taveras are likely to be dealt. Ian Stewart got a chance to prove his ability to play third base in the second half of 2008, and the Rockies will look to trade Atkins for a quality starting pitcher with big-league credentials. Taveras set a franchise record for stolen bases, but run-production is a concern.

IN LIMBO: LF Matt Holliday is signed for 2009 at $13.5 million, but he is eligible for free agency after that, and he has Scott Boras as his agent. The Rockies have proposed a deal that would cover the first four years of free agency, but Holliday has indicated he is looking for seven or eight years. That doesn't fit in the Rockies' plans.

MEDICAL WATCH:

1B Todd Helton had arthroscopic surgery Sept. 30 to repair a bulging disk in his lower back. He should be at full strength for spring training.

C Yorvit Torrealba was feeling strong at the end of the season after arthroscopic surgery in early September on his left knee. He expects to play a month to six weeks of winter ball in his native Venezuela.
