Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2008-08-29
--RHP Aaron Cook has a 4.98 ERA -- to go with a 4-2 record -- in seven starts since pitching three innings in the All-Star Game. And scouts say the sink is missing from Cook's sinker. The struggles, however, go back further than the All-Star Game. Cook was 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA in his last nine starts before the break, including three in which he allowed six earned runs or more. After opening the season 7-3 with a 2.82 ERA in his first 11 starts, Cook is 9-5 with a 4.70 ERA in the last 16.

--RHP Jhoulys Chacin allowed one run in five innings but had a no-decision in Class A Modesto's 5-2 loss to San Jose on Wednesday, denying him a chance to be the organization's first 20-game winner. He has a chance for a 19th win in Modesto's season finale at Bakersfield on Monday, which would equal the organization record that Jeff Francis set in 2004 when he was 13-1 at Class AA Tulsa, and 3-2 with both Class AAA Colorado Springs and the big-league Rockies.

--LF Matt Holliday, who has been below .340 only one day since July 22, is third in the NL batting race with a .340 average. The defending batting champ, Holliday trails Atlanta's Chipper Jones (.359) and St. Louis' Albert Pujols (.357). Holliday is also fourth in the NL with a .427 on-base percentage.

--3B Ian Stewart is hitting .426 with runners in scoring position, tops among 168 NL players with at least 50 plate appearances with runners in scoring position.

--Two former first-round draft picks, RHP Casey Weathers (2006) and SS Chris Nelson (2004), are among seven players the Rockies will have on the Phoenix Desert Dogs roster in the Arizona Fall League. Weathers and Nelson join RHPs Ryan Mattheus and Chaz Roe, and OF Eric Young Jr., who were teammates of Weathers and Nelson at Class AA Tulsa this year, along with RHP Shane Lindsay and C Mike McKenry as Rockies prospects who will be sent to the AFL.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Home runs in 427 career at-bats for IF Omar Quintanilla, including one in 195 at-bats this season, before he hit a game-winning shot Aug. 24. Quintanilla had gone 121 at-bats since his only other homer, a two-run shot off Chicago's Ryan Dempster on May 31 at Wrigley Field.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Not always in this game do appropriate things happen, but that was very appropriate that that happened for him today, because he does his work so professionally. Shows up every day; I've never heard him complain about anything." -- Manager Clint Hurdle, on utility IF Omar Quintanilla's walk-off homer that gave the Rockies a 4-3 win in 12 innings on Aug. 24.
