Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2008-08-15
--RHP Oscar Villarreal signed a minor league contract, a move that entails minimal financial risk and could net the Rockies a long reliever. He'll make his organizational debut Saturday for Class AAA Colorado Springs. Villarreal, 26, signed a two-year, $3 million deal with Houston after last season but was released in July after he refused an assignment to the minors, which was his right as a player with five years of major league service time. Villarreal went 1-3 with a 5.02 ERA for the Astros this year, then went 1-0 with one save and a 4.66 ERA in five games for Seattle's Class AAA Tacoma affiliate, holding opposing hitters to a .189 average.

--C Yorvit Torrealba was scratched from the lineup and underwent an MRI that detected a small meniscus tear in his left knee. He received a cortisone shot and traveled with the team to Washington. Torrealba said the knee had been bothering him for about a week and a half but became particularly painful when he tried to squat before the game.

--The Rockies purchased the contract of C Adam Melhuse, who played in 64 games with the Rockies in 2000-2001.

Melhuse, 36, began the season with Texas but was released April 30. He signed a minor league contract with Colorado on June 24, and after five games at short-season Tri-City, Melhuse went to Colorado Springs, where he hit .317 with three homers and 14 RBI in 29 games.

To make room on the roster for Melhuse, OF Cory Sullivan was optioned to Colorado Springs.

--CF Willy Taveras stole his 53rd base, tying the franchise record set by Eric Young in 141 games in 1996. Taveras has played in 103 games.

--RHP Aaron Cook said he hadn't been told whether he will start Sunday at Washington or Tuesday at Los Angeles, following Monday's off day. Scratched from his Thursday start because of a stiff back, Cook threw a bullpen session and said, "Everything was good."

--1B Garrett Atkins entered the game in the fifth inning on a double switch and went 1-for-3 after missing two games with strep throat. "That's the worst I've ever had it, for sure," Atkins said. "I had it as a kid, but I don't remember it being that bad."

--OF Scott Podsednik, who fractured his left pinkie July 27, traveled with the team to Washington, where he's expected to take batting practice for the first time before beginning a brief rehabilitation assignment. Podsednik has hit off a tee and done soft-toss drills since his injury.

--The Rockies have homered in nine consecutive games, matching the longest streak of the season (June 17-25). During the current streak, the team has hit 12 home runs.

BY THE NUMBERS: 206 -- Hits allowed by Livan Hernandez in 142 1/3 innings this season, including seven in 2 2/3 innings in his Rockies debut. Hernandez has yielded an average 13.03 hits per nine innings and could become the first pitcher to give up 300 hits in a season since 1979 when Phil Niekro allowed 311 hits. But Niekro, a knuckleball pitcher who turned 40 at the beginning of that season, threw 342 innings and allowed an average of 8.18 hits per nine innings.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "No fireworks. No bright lights. Real business-like." -- Manager Clint Hurdle on LHP Glendon Rusch, who is 4-0 with a 3.58 ERA in six starts since rejoining the rotation July 9. The Rockies are 5-1 in those games.
