Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2008-07-30
--OF Cory Sullivan, taken off the 40-man roster earlier this season when he cleared waivers, rejoined the Rockies. He took the spot of OF Scott Podsednik, expected to be on the disabled list for several weeks with a non-displaced fracture of his left little finger, an injury he suffered last weekend in Cincinnati. Podsednik had raised his average to .263 since the All-Star break, going 10-for-18 with five doubles. Sullivan was called up briefly earlier in the season, but he made only one start in nine games and was 2-for-12. He was put on waivers at the request of his agent to see if any other team would claim him, but his $1 million salary proved a deterrent. "We wanted to see what was out there, and it also gave the Rockies a chance to get out from under the salary," Sullivan said.

--LHP Valerio De Los Santos may start again at Florida on Friday, manager Clint Hurdle said. De Los Santos made his first big-league appearance in more than three years and his first start since April 2000 on Monday in Pittsburgh. He departed after walking the first two batters of the fifth with a 3-0 lead. He was charged with both runs and walked six in four-plus innings. Hurdle said he felt De Los Santos "felt a little uncomfortable" on Monday in light of his long absence from the big leagues.

--RHP Jason Hirsh did not help his case for a promotion from Class AAA Colorado Springs on Monday, giving up eight runs, three walks and 11 hits, including three home runs, in seven innings. "We like Jason Hirsh, but he needs to back up one good start with another, and that has not happened," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "The tough times will help him in the long run."

--LHP Mark Redman wasn't walking away from $350,000-plus that was remaining on his contract, so he reported to Class AAA Colorado Springs after clearing waivers. He has allowed one run and five hits in 3 1/3 innings of two relief appearances since rejoining Colorado Springs.

--RHP Andrew Johnston, who had 24 saves with high Class A Modesto, tops in the California League, was promoted to Class AA Tulsa, filling the opening created by RHP Casey Weathers pitching for Team USA in the Olympics.

--With LHP Valerio De Los Santos' Rockies debut on Monday, the team has used 23 pitchers, including 10 starters, this season. That's two pitchers and three starters shy of their total for last season.

--RHP Alberto Arias, who was up briefly with the Rockies this year and last year, was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for OF Cory Sullivan. The Rockies have placed him on waivers, and if he clears on Thursday he will be sent outright to Class AAA Colorado Springs' roster. He has been pitching for Colorado Springs.

BY THE NUMBERS: 24 -- RBIs in July for Garret Atkins, giving him 66 for the season. He had 21 in May and June combined.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You don't like to throw comparisons around, but he makes plays like (Graig) Nettles used to make at third base as far as the reverse spin, throwing from his pants. There's not many guys that make that play, and Nettles made it a lot." -- Manager Clint Hurdle on 3B Ian Stewart's defense.
