--1B Todd Helton (lower back inflammation) has begun swinging a bat and hitting off a tee. He also is running on a treadmill and riding an exercise bike.

--OF Ryan Spilborghs (left oblique strain) has begun light exercises.

--LHP Jeff Francis will make a third minor league rehab start for Double-A Tulsa on Thursday before being activated. The Rockies want Francis to extend his pitch count to 100 before returning to the big-league rotation. Manager Clint hurdle said Francis did have a little stiffness after working 4 2/3 innings on Saturday but worked it out while playing catch on Sunday.

--RHP Jason Hirsh, meanwhile, remains at Triple-A Colorado Springs, instead of being called up on Monday, because the Rockies are not convinced he is 100 percent yet. Hirsh, who suffered a sprained right rotator cuff during spring training, has been inconsistent with his command and has not regained is velocity.

"I know he'd like to be here, but to give him a fighting chance to be the best he can be, I don't know (if he is in shape for that)," said manager Clint Hurdle.

Hirsh started at Colorado Springs on Monday night, giving up eight runs on 11 hits (three of those home runs) in seven innings with three walks and three strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision of a 12-9 Sky Sox win over Oklahoma. Hirsh is 2-3 with a 5.80 ERA in 11 games at Colorado Springs.

--RHP Ryan Speier was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs to make room for LHP Valerio De Los Santos, who started against the Pirates. It is the third time Speier has been sent to the Springs this season. Speier has an option, which means he can be sent out and not have to clear waivers. "He did not pitch his way off the roster," said manager Clint Hurdle, who has to wait for 10 days to recall Speier unless there is an injury to the pitching staff.

--SS Troy Tulowitzki was 2-for-3 and has hit safely in seven of eight games (15-for-29) since coming off the disabled list, raising his average from .163 to .222.

BY THE NUMBERS: 24 -- RBIs in July for Garret Atkins, giving him 66 for the season. He had 21 in May and June combined.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You don't like to throw comparisons around, but he makes plays like (Graig) Nettles used to make at third base as far as the reverse spin, throwing from his pants. There's not many guys that make that play, and Nettles made it a lot." -- Manager Clint Hurdle on 3B Ian Stewart's defense.
