Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2008-06-14
--SS Troy Tulowitzki walked in his only plate appearance on Friday, his third game with High-A Modesto on a medical rehab assignment. Tulowitzki plans to play in the field for the Nuts at Rancho Cucamonga Saturday night and Sunday before moving to Class AAA Colorado Springs with the expectation he will rejoin the Rockies next Friday when they open a series against the Mets at Coors Field.

--RHP Jason Hirsh, who lobbied to be activated from the disabled list and start Saturday night in Chicago, was given a not so subtle message that he needs to get better before he is activated. He was removed from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Class AAA Colorado Springs. The move provides a minimal financial break for the Rockies -- $1,138 a day while Hirsh is in the minor leagues -- but it keeps Hirsh from receiving big-league service time for being on the disabled list, and also allows the Rockies to extend his stay in the minor leagues if they don't feel he is ready after the end of his 30-day rehab assignment.

--OF Cory Sullivan, playing for Class AAA Colorado Springs, was placed on waivers and cleared, removing him from the 40-man roster. At the request of Sullivan's agent, the outfielder was put on waivers, but with a $1 million salary, none of the 29 other teams put in a roster claim and Sullivan will remain at Colorado Springs, although he will be called up if the Rockies trade either Willy Taveras or Scott Podsednik.

--C Yorvit Torrealba figures to have his suspension for his tussle with Dodger OF Matt Kemp reduced from three games to one, but no announcement has been made yet. Kemp, who admitted he instigated the incident, had a four-game suspension reduced to two games. Manager Clint Hurdle said a catcher will have to be added to the roster during Torrealba's suspension. "What if you had to go to your emergency catcher in the second, third or fourth inning?" asked manager Clint Hurdle. "That's not fair to the team."

--Rockies relievers have 12 blown saves in 26 opportunities, two behind major-league-leading Texas, which has blown 14 of 28 save situations.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Rockies pitchers in franchise history that have recorded 500 strikeouts -- Pedro Astacio (749), Jason Jennings (622) and left-hander Jeff Francis (502). Francis reached the milestone June 8.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Now that he's healthy, hopefully we're going to see the kind of guy that we went out to acquire over the winter." -- Manager Clint Hurdle on Luis Vizcaino, a free agent who signed a two-year, $7.5 million contract in the off-season and made his Coors Field debut by pitching a scoreless eighth with two walks in his first appearance since April 3.
