Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2009-05-02
--OF Matt Murton became the 1,100th player to strike out against Randy Johnson in his first at-bat. All the other Rockies position players had previously struck out against him. Murton, who was recalled Wednesday and struck out as a pinch-hitter, made his first start for the Rockies and went 2-for-4. He batted second and played LF with Ryan Spilborghs playing RF. Regular RF Brad Hawpe is recovered from the neck contusion he received Monday when he was hit with a thrown ball, but manager Clint Hurdle figured the right-handed hitting Murton might fare better against LHP Randy Johnson. Hawpe is 0-for-9 with four strikeouts against Johnson. Hawpe pinch hit in the ninth and flied out in his first appearance since Monday.

--OF Kevin Clark was given a 50-game suspension after testing positive for an amphetamine, a violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Clark was assigned to high Class A Modesto of the California League where he was hitting .241 with four RBI in 12 games after hitting .262 last year at low Class A Asheville where he ranked second on the club in home runs (17) and third in RBI (76).

--The Rockies finished April with an 8-12 record, a .400 winning percentage, which is their third-lowest April winning percentage in franchise history. Colorado was 6-15 in 2005 and 8-14 in 1993. The Rockies went 2-4-1 in April series, winning their first and last series of the month. This was their third straight losing April and fifth in the past six years. Their overall April record in 17 seasons is 178-209.

--RHP Aaron Cook on Wednesday became the first Rockies starter other than Jason Marquis to earn a victory since April 10. Marquis is 3-1. The rest of the Rockies starters are 3-7.

BY THE NUMBERS: 121 -- At-bats without a home run, including 58 this season, for OF Ryan Spilborghs, who ended that drought with a two-run shot in the third inning April 26. It was Spilborghs' first homer since he hit two on July 4 against the Marlins at Coors Field.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's time for him to just accept it, 'OK, this is what I've been. How do I get back to what I can be?' Take the next step. There's no bad luck involved. These are things he can control and get back in place. He can be very productive out there and very good." -- Manager Clint Hurdle on struggling RHP Ubaldo Jimenez.
