Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2009-04-27
--The Rockies are 1-5 against the Dodgers, whom they next play May 25 at Coors Field. They broke a four-game losing streak at Coors Field where they are 2-4 this season.

--The Rockies scored five runs in the fifth, equaling their total in that inning in their first 15 games and matching their biggest inning of the season; they scored five runs in the third April 10 against the Phillies in a 10-3 win. The Rockies also matched their season-high run total in their 10-4 win over the Dodgers.

--Manager Clint Hurdle batted slumping SS Troy Tulowitzki second for the second time this season, sat left-handed hitting Todd Helton down against LHP Clayton Kershaw and gave IF Jeff Baker his fourth start of the season, this one at 3B, given that Baker was 4-for-6 with two homers against Kershaw. "I wanted to find a way to reorganize the furniture and find more right-handed bats," Hurdle said.

Tulowitzki went 0-for-3 with his team-leading 11th walk but is hitless in his past 17 at-bats with eight strikeouts and 9-for-54 for the season. Baker went 0-for-2 against Kershaw but tripled home three runs, greeting LHP Scott Elbert with the hit when he replaced Kershaw.

--OF Ryan Spilborghs went 4-for-5 on April 22 in a 2-0 loss at Arizona. Only one other player in the majors in the past four seasons had four or more hits in a game in which his team was shut out, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Minnesota's Alexi Casilla went 4-for-4 in a 5-0 loss to Cleveland on Sept. 3, 2007.

--To clear a spot on their 40-man roster for RHP Matt Daley, the Rockies moved RH reliever Taylor Buchholz from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list on April 22. Hence, Buchholz, who is sidelined with a partial tear of a ligament in his right elbow, is ineligible to return until May 26. That's in keeping with the original estimate when he was injured that Buchholz would be out until about June 1.

--The Rockies are 3-3 this season at Chase Field, where they have three games remaining beginning Sept. 18. Last year, the Rockies went 1-8 at Chase Field while losing 15 of 18 games to the Diamondbacks. Losing the rubber game of a series April 22 kept the Rockies from winning back-to-back series at Chase Field for the first time since 2007 -- May 21-23 and Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

--RHP Matt Belisle's win April 21 was his first in relief since May 18, 2006, for the Pirates. The victory came in the Rockies 12th game and was their first by a reliever.

--RHP Ryan Speier was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 21 retroactive to April 19 with a strained left hamstring. He was 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA in five games and has allowed six hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. He has been scored upon in his past two appearances. Speier has retired just one of the five first batters he has faced and has allowed the four runners he has inherited to score. Speier said his hamstring began bothering him in the waning days of spring training and reached a point where it was affecting his delivery. "I'm much more upright," he said, "and I wasn't staying down through my pitches because I'm favoring it so much."

BY THE NUMBERS: 121 -- At-bats without a home run, including 58 this season, for OF Ryan Spilborghs, who ended that drought with a two-run shot in the third inning April 26. It was Spilborghs' first homer since he hit two on July 4 against the Marlins at Coors Field.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's time for him to just accept it, 'OK, this is what I've been. How do I get back to what I can be?' Take the next step. There's no bad luck involved. These are things he can control and get back in place. He can be very productive out there and very good." -- Manager Clint Hurdle on struggling RHP Ubaldo Jimenez.
