Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2009-04-21
--The Rockies have trailed for 30 consecutive innings, dating from the seventh inning Friday night at Los Angeles when they fell behind the Dodgers 4-3.

--When their three-game series with the Diamondbacks ends Wednesday, the Rockies will have played twice as many games at Chase Field (6) as they have at Coors Field (3).

--UT Ian Stewart has started games at third base, his natural position, second base, right field and left field. Bouncing around hasn't bothered Stewart, who is 8-for-20 with two homers and six RBIs and 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

"If I had my preference, I'd like to play third," Stewart said. "But I like the challenge in front of me right now. I just want to play whenever I can. It's kind of funny, because I get excited coming to the ballpark and not really knowing where I'm going to play. It's been a new challenge for me."

--The Rockies open their second three-game series of the season at Arizona, where they began the season and won two of three April 6-8. The Diamondbacks don't come to Coors Field until July 3, and the Rockies don't return to Phoenix for their final series until Sept. 18.

The Rockies are 4-7 and five games behind, just as they were a year ago, only this time they trail the Dodgers, not the Diamondbacks.

--RHP Juan Morillo was claimed off waivers by the Twins, who were 21st in line and the first team willing to put up the $20,000 to acquire the hard-throwing but inconsistent reliever. When a player is placed on waivers in the first 30 days of a season, teams with the worst records the previous season, regardless of league, have priority in making a claim. After the 30-day period, claims are made according to the worst records in the current season.

Morillo was on the Rockies' roster to begin the season but didn't get into any games before being designated for assignment April 10 to make room on the roster for RHP Jason Hammel, whom the Rockies acquired from the Rays one day before the start of the regular season. The delay in activating Hammel came because he threw 82 pitches in a minor league game with the Rays on April 5.

Morillo, who was out of minor league options, can throw in the mid-90s and has registered 100 mph and above on several occasions, but control has been an issue. He had 56 walks and 55 strikeouts in 59 2/3 innings last year at Class AAA Colorado Springs and 11 walks and 11 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings in spring training. Morillo made his Twins debut Saturday night, pitching a scoreless ninth with a 9-2 lead and throwing 10 of 13 pitches for strikes while giving up a single and striking out one against the Angels.

--Twice in the first 10 games, the Rockies allowed two opposing players to homer twice in the same game. Felipe Lopez and Tony Clark of the Diamondbacks did it at Arizona in the season opener April 6. Manny Ramirez and Andre Ethier each hit two homers for the Dodgers in Los Angeles on April 18.

RHP Aaron Cook and LHP Glendon Rusch each gave up one of Lopez's and Clark's homers. Cook allowed Ramirez's two homers and one by Ethier, who hit his second homer off Alan Embree.

BY THE NUMBERS: 6.87 -- ERA for the Rockies bullpen, which had allowed 11 homers in 36 2/3 innings through April 19.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Our lineup is full of tough outs, one through eight, and it's one through nine when Marquis is in there." -- 3B Garrett Atkins, on the hitting prowess of RHP Jason Marquis, who was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a double while winning his first two starts.
