Colorado Rockies Notes, Quotes 2008-10-28
--RHP Luis Vizcaino was arrested in Tampa, Fla., on Oct. 27 and charged with misdemeanor DUI.

--Hitting coach Alan Cockrell, third base coach Mike Gallegeo and bench coach Jamie Quirk were fired after the season, and bullpen coach Rick Mathews was reassigned.

The Rockies don't expect to finalize their coaching situation until mid-November. Roving pitching instructor Jim Wright and Class AA Tulsa pitching coach Bo McLaughlin are the candidates to be the bullpen coach.

Roving infield instructor Rich Dauer, Class AAA Colorado Springs manager Tom Runnells, Colorado Springs coach Rene Lachemann, former Seattle manager John McLaren and former Pittsburgh and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Jim Tracy are being considered for the bench coach and third base coach jobs.

Former Rockies first baseman Greg Colbrunn and former Kansas City manager Tony Muser are being considered for the hitting coach job.

Gallego, who coached third for the Rockies the past four seasons and worked with the infielders, was hired by the Oakland Athletics to do the same job.

--The Rockies declined their 2009 option for $2.5 million on RHP Matt Herges, who made $2 million this year, and gave him a $250,000 buyout. Herges was bothered by lower back stiffness during the season and went 3-4 with a 5.08 ERA and five blown saves in 58 games. Herges had a 3.32 in 36 games as of June 30, but from that point on allowed 38 hits and 21 runs in 23 2/3 innings for a 7.99 ERA.

--2B Jayson Nix, the 44th overall pick in the 2001 draft and the highest pick of the Rockies that year, was granted free agency. Nix, 26, was the Rockies' Opening Day second baseman last season but was sent down to Class AAA Colorado Springs on April 26 after hitting .111 (5-for-45) in 17 games, including 12 starts. The Rockies recalled Nix on July 8 but again designated him for assignment on July 19 after he went 2-for-11 in five games, including three starts.

By taking Nix off the major league roster, the Rockies made him eligible to play for Team USA in the Olympics. With an abundance of players to play second base, the Rockies didn't recall Nix when the rosters were expanded in September. Nix played in 67 games for Colorado Springs and hit .303 with 17 homers and 51 RBIs. He has yet to prove he is a major league player and might be that proverbial 4-A player -- not quite good enough for the big leagues but better than the typical Class AAA player. The chance to show otherwise will now come in another organization.

--OF Cory Sullivan, 29, was granted free agency. He made $1 million last season when he was supposed to be an extra outfielder with the Rockies, but they signed OF Scott Podsednik just before spring training, and he beat out Sullivan for that job. Sullivan spent most of the season at Class AAA Colorado Springs, where he hit .320 with seven homers, 47 RBIs and a .373 on-base percentage in 94 games.

Sullivan had two tours with the Rockies -- May 25 through June 5 and July 29 through Aug. 13 -- played in 17 games, two starts, and hit .217 (5-for-23) with four RBIs.

--LHP Valerio De Los Santos was granted free agency. He made spot starts for the Rockies on July 28 at Pittsburgh and Aug. 2 at Florida and went 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA. De Los Santos only allowed six hits in eight innings in those games, four in each start, but had more walks (11) than strikeouts (10). De Los Santos, 36, went 4-5 with a 5.63 ERA in 23 games for Class AAA Colorado Springs, including eight starts.

--RHP Ryan Mattheus was forced to leave the Arizona Fall League due to tendinitis in his right shoulder. RHP David Patton went from Hawaii Winter Baseball to the AFL to replace Mattheus, and RHP Austin Chambliss went from Instructional League to Hawaii to replace Patton.

--Pitching coach Eduardo Villacis, 29, was fired after two seasons at rookie-level Casper. He signed with the Rockies in 1998, pitched in their system until May 2002 and had returned to the organization to coach after the 2006 season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 25 -- Pitchers used by the Rockies this year, including 12 starters. The latter group included Ubaldo Jimenez (34 starts), Aaron Cook (32), Jeff Francis (24), Jorge De La Rosa (23), Greg Reynolds (13), Glendon Rusch (9), Mark Redman (9), Livan Hernandez (8), Franklin Morales (5), Kip Wells (2), Valerio De Los Santos (2) and Jason Hirsh (1).

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I know Casey's taking it hard, but he's young and we'll see where he is a year from now. But it's a tough break for him and for our club." -- Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd on reliever Casey Weathers, who will undergo ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow and miss the 2009 season.
