Rockieshome.com | Colorado Rockies News, rockies Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - Brian Fuentes earned his franchise-record 103rd save in the Rockies' 7-4 victory at Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.
The question is whether the 103rd is also the last. The Rockies were listening to one last round of proposals from at least a handful of teams that remain interested in acquiring Fuentes before Thursday's trade deadline. Indications are that if the Rockies can get what they want -- a top-quality prospect who can step into the rotation right now -- Fuentes would be dealt. The Cardinals, Mets, Red Sox, White Sox and Phillies are among teams still in the hunt for Colorado's closer.
"I hadn't thought about that, but I'd hope that this makes me one step closer to not being traded," Fuentes said about possibly being dealt right after setting the record. "There's no reason I can't help this team get back in the race."
No reason, other than if he's not with the Rockies any longer.
"I try not to think about that," said Aaron Cook, who now shares the NL lead in victories at 14 with Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb after pitching the first seven innings Wednesday.
Fuentes has been successful for the Rockies. A three-time All-Star, he always has been very professional. He didn't complain when he lost in arbitration last winter, and he didn't complain a year ago when he lost his closer job to Manny Corpas.
He just kept pitching well, and when Corpas stumbled this year, Fuentes stepped back into the role with no trouble. He has converted 18 of 20 saves since regaining the job as the ninth-inning reliever. And he has enjoyed it enough that he even found reason for a long-term memory with his record-setting moment Wednesday.
"This feels better than I thought," said Fuentes, who moved ahead of Jose Jimenez on the Rockies' all-time saves list. "When I tied (Jimenez), it didn't seem like that big of a deal, but coming off the mound (Wednesday), it was special to think I had more than anyone in the organization."
The question now is whether Fuentes can get the chance to build on that record.
ROCKIES 7, PIRATES 4: Aaron Cook survived seven innings, rebounding after giving up four runs in the fifth to retire nine of the final 10 batters he faced and claim his 14th win of the season. Chris Iannetta keyed a four-run sixth inning with a three-run home run, his 12th of the season. He has driven in 17 runs in his last 15 games. The Rockies are 28-27 in games he has started. The win was the Rockies' 10th in 13 games since the All-Star break, and it allowed them to avoid being swept by the Pirates.
