Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-05-11
The Rockies' slow start has raised an inevitable question: Would the team fare better with a manager other than Clint Hurdle? He's in the last year of his contract and has been at the Rockies' helm since he replaced Buddy Bell on April 26, 2002.

General manager Dan O'Dowd, whose contract is also in its final year, hasn't reached the point where he thinks a managerial change is necessary. He said, "We have good players and some of them just aren't playing up to their ability. And I believe they will at some point in time, hopefully sooner rather than later."

That said, O'Dowd said how long he would wait for that to happen is more of an intuitive decision, and he's not there yet.

"I don't know if there's a magic number to that, but I do think if you get to a point that a change needs to be made for the best interests of the organization, you know it," O'Dowd said. "I don't feel that. That's not something I would recommend at this point in time."

O'Dowd's remarks came May 9 before the Rockies lost 8-3 to the Marlins. They won 3-2 the following day, to break a string of eight straight one-run losses to start the season and to improve to 2-11 in games decided by two or fewer runs. The Rockies are 1-13 in games where they have trailed after six innings.

"It's always frustrating when you don't play up to your potential, which is pretty much what we've done to date," first baseman Todd Helton said. "We know we have the talent here. We just have to play better. I think we're pressing a little bit; that's fairly obvious."

ROCKIES 3, MARLINS 2: After going 0-8 in one-run games, the Rockies became the last team in the majors to win one. They scored two runs in the first when Troy Tulowitzki homered and Todd Helton tripled and scored on Brad Hawpe's sacrifice fly. They added an unearned run in the fifth when 3B Emilio Bonafacio made a throwing error to open the inning and Helton doubled home a run with two out. RHP Aaron Cook held the Marlins to two runs, one earned, in six innings, and RHP Matt Dale, LHP Alan Embree and RHP Huston Street each worked one scoreless inning.
