Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-05-08

Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-05-08
It would have been a modest achievement, to be sure, but a start nonetheless. The Rockies have not swept a series this year. They had the chance to sweep a two-game series against the Giants but played poorly while losing 8-3 on Thursday.

The Rockies went 7-12 in a just-concluded stretch of 19 consecutive games against NL West clubs. They entered the stretch 4-4 and two games out of first, but they are now 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Dodgers.

Jason Marquis, who has been the Rockies' most consistent starter this season, not only lost for the first time at Coors Field but committed two of the Rockies' season-high three errors Thursday. It was the first two-error game for Marquis, who entered the game with 14 career errors.

After beating Randy Johnson on Wednesday in an 11-1 win, the Rockies were held to four hits, two through the first eight innings, and were limited to one single in six innings by Matt Cain, who issued a season-high five walks.

"We didn't do much to help ourselves today across the board," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We weren't able to bring a lot of offense. ... Some situations defensively we didn't handle well, which led to some extended innings."

The Rockies fell to 5-6 at Coors Field and 9-13 against the NL West, hardly where they hoped to be when they set sail on their lengthy run within the division.

GIANTS 8, ROCKIES 3: Jason Marquis gave up two homers to Bengie Molina and made two of the Rockies' three errors as Colorado failed to sweep a two-game series.

Marquis gave up a homer in the second to Molina and a two-run shot in the third, when the Giants scored four runs. Matt Cain issued a season-high five walks but allowed just one single in six scoreless innings. Brad Hawpe homered for the Rockies in the seventh, and Ian Stewart hit a two-run shot in the ninth.
