Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-05-04
Ian Stewart wasn't in the Rockies' lineup Sunday. And it wasn't because Stewart bats left-handed and left-hander Barry Zito started for the Giants. Stewart is 0-for-6 lifetime against Stewart, but that had nothing to with manager Clint Hurdle's decision.

Indeed, Hurdle and hitting coach Don Baylor sat down with Stewart on Sunday to discuss his lack of aggressiveness early in the count, particularly against righties. Stewart did enter the Rockies' 1-0 loss in 10 innings as a pinch hitter in the eighth, hit a ball well but flied deep to center against Merkin Valdez. That at-bat dropped Stewart's average to .231, but he swung at the first pitch, a sign his session with Hurdle and Baylor bore fruit.

Stewart entered the game hitting .364 with a .727 slugging percentage against left-handers. But he was hitting .200 with 13 strikeouts against righties and been too passive in those at-bats.

"Ian has taken more fastball strikes than anybody on the club," Hurdle said. "He's not in a good place at the plate right now. We have to find a way to re-spark 'Stew.' As good as he's hit against left-handed hitters, if you are a left-handed power hitter, you'd better be able to hit against right-handers somewhere down the line."

Stewart, who has three homers and 11 RBIs, said, "I'll be looking out over the plate and guys will be throwing me in, and for some reason I'm just not able to pull the trigger. I just need to be more aggressive earlier in the count. At the very least, I should be swinging at fastballs early in the count."

GIANTS 1, ROCKIES 0 (10 innings): In their first extra-inning game of the season, the Rockies left five runners on base in the final two innings and lost when Manuel Corpas walked leadoff batter Steve Holm, a third-string catcher who was playing in his first game since being recalled April 22 and was down 1-2 in the count, and after a sacrifice gave up a single to Rich Aurlia, who fouled off two 0-2 pitches before delivering his game-winning hit. With two out and the bases loaded in the ninth, Troy Tulowitzki popped out. And with one out in the 10th and runners on first and second, Dexter Fowler took a third strike and Ryan Spilborghs popped out.
