Huston Street seems likely to reclaim the Rockies' closer role.

Street's recent effectiveness, coupled with the struggles of reliever Manuel Corpas, point to a change.

Street began the season as the Rockies' closer but lost the role after an outing April 15. To that point, he was 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in four games. He allowed a game-winning pinch homer to the Phillies' Matt Stairs on April 12, and in his next outing, which wasn't a save situation, he gave up a leadoff homer to the Cubs' Derrek Lee, followed by a walk and a bloop hit before getting removed.

Manager Clint Hurdle then decided to let Corpas close and moved Street back to the middle of the game. Corpas earned a save April 21 at Arizona, but he took the loss April 24 against the Dodgers and again April 28 against the Padres. He's 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in 11 games. Worse, scouts have his velocity at 86-88 mph and say his slider lacks bite.

Corpas has been scored upon in three of his past four and four of his past six outings. He wasn't available Wednesday because he made three consecutive one-inning appearances the previous three days and threw a total of 70 pitches.

Street, pitching for the fourth straight day, struck out the side in the ninth Wednesday to seal the Rockies' 7-5 win over the Padres. He threw 15 pitches, 12 strikes, while earning his second save and first since his Rockies debut, April 7 at Arizona.

After the game, Hurdle said he would sleep on the matter and said what he usually does when contemplating a major decision -- he would let the players involved know before the media.

Street has made four consecutive scoreless outings, covering three innings, with one hit allowed in that stretch. His effectiveness stems from taking the advice of pitching coach Bob Apodaca and moving a few inches toward the third base side of the pitching rubber.
