Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-04-24
It's time for the Rockies to make a move now that the schedule turns in their favor.

They Rockies knew the beginning of the season would be a challenge with 11 of their first 14 games on the road against the likes of the Diamondbacks, Cubs and Dodgers. And their only home games in that period were against the World Series champion Phillies.

Still, the Rockies made the worst of it, stumbling to a 5-9 start that dropped them into last place in the NL West, five games behind the Dodgers.

The Rockies have played more games in Arizona (six) than at Coors Field (three), but they open a six-game homestand Friday against the Dodgers and Padres. It's the start of a stretch that will see the Rockies play 14 of their next 19 games at home through May 14.

After hosting Los Angeles and San Diego, the Rockies will play three games at San Francisco and two at San Diego before coming home to play the Giants (two games), Marlins (three) and Astros (three).

If the Rockies can't capitalize, they'll have a pretty good idea that their dreadful start can't be dismissed due to a small sample size, trying too hard, too many games on the road or any other variable. They'd have to face the fact that something systemic is gumming up the works.

While going 2-6 on their trip to Chicago, Los Angeles and Arizona, the Rockies were outscored 47-27 and went 12-for-73 (.164) with runners in scoring position. When Jorge De La Rosa worked 6 2/3 innings Wednesday at Arizona, he became the first Rockies starter to pitch into the sixth in six games, or since Jason Marquis went seven innings April 15 at Chicago.

In 14 games, the Rockies' starters have pitched a total of 71 innings, a figure that might have been somewhat bigger had Franklin Morales not departed after two innings Tuesday with a strained left lat muscle. Regardless, the starters are averaging 5.07 innings per game, which is going to have to improve for the Rockies to take advantage of the opportunity the schedule brings them in the next 19 games.
