Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-04-23
Right-handed reliever Matt Daley, who went to Bucknell University, signed with the Rockies as a free agent in 2004 after no team drafted him. He went to big-league camp for the first time this year and had a 1.42 ERA in six Cactus League games as a non-roster invitee, a reward for going 4-6 with a 3.75 ERA in 60 games for Class AAA Colorado Springs in 2008.

Daley found himself in the major leagues for the first time Wednesday when left-hander Franklin Morales was placed on the disabled list with a strained left lat muscle. Daley was fortunate that Colorado Springs was playing at Reno, leaving him with a reasonably short trip to Phoenix, where the Rockies closed out a series with a day game against Arizona.

Daley, 26, went 0-0 with a 1.15 ERA in five games for Colorado Springs with one walk and 15 strikeouts in eight innings. He has a somewhat unorthodox delivery, since he crouches while he pitches, but he throws strikes consistently. Daley, who joins outfielder Dexter Fowler as the only rookies on the Rockies, entered this season with 309 strikeouts and 100 walks in 346 innings over 226 minor league games.

"People always want to say what he can't do. He's not a scout's dream, but all he does is get outs," manager Clint Hurdle said.

Daley credited Colorado Springs catchers Sal Fasano and Paul Phillips with giving him insight into different hitters and their swing paths. The promotion came as a happy surprise to him.

"I really wasn't expecting it," he said. "I thought if I kept pitching the way I was pitching, maybe later on in the season it would happen, but not this quick. But if they call you up in April, it means they really need you. It's a cool feeling to have. I'm going to try to take advantage of it."

DIAMONDBACKS 2, ROCKIES 0: The Rockies went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, 0-for-8 against RHP Dan Haren, lost the rubber game of the series and were shut out for the second time in 14 games this season. PH Ryan Roberts singled home the first run of the game in the seventh against Jorge De La Rosa, and Jason Grilli walked in the final run upon relieving De La Rosa.
