Right-hander Jason Marquis, who will make his Rockies debut Friday against the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies in the home opener, is 3-0 with a 2.51 ERA in five games at Coors Field.

He has allowed eight earned runs in 28 2/3 innings in Denver.

"It has been a good place for me," Marquis said. "It's a beautiful place, great stadium, nice city. I just really have success there for whatever reason in games in that ballpark. I'll just keep doing what I do.

"It's a big honor, and I look forward to it. If we can get the season (off) on the right foot, hopefully we can keep the fans interested in coming out day after day to support us."

Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said he had the assignment of starting the home opener in mind for Marquis as far as back as late December when the Rockies were finalizing the deal that sent right-handed reliever Luis Vizcaino to the Cubs for Marquis, 30.

"Nine years in the big leagues," Hurdle said. "He's pitched in the playoffs. He's pitched on good ballclubs, pitched a volume of innings. He's an out-front guy. He actually reminds me of that guy on 'CSI: New York,' Carmine, the kid from Brooklyn. He's kind of like a pit bull on your ankle all the time."

Marquis has plenty of New York in him. He grew up in Brooklyn and now lives on Staten Island.

Marquis further lengthens the Rockies' lineup, because he's far from the standard easy out most pitchers are. In 2004, he hit .292 while pitching for St. Louis and .310 the next year. He fell below .200 each of the next two seasons but increased his average 64 points to .203 last year when he reached a single-season high with two homers and matched his single-season high with 10 RBIs.

"I always consider myself an athlete who is a pitcher," Marquis said. "I try not to lose my skills in other parts of the game. It can help you win ballgames, too. Over the last few years, I've won my team ballgames from hitting or pinch-running and scoring some runs. I just take pride in whatever I do."
