Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-04-08

Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2009-04-08
When Franklin Morales starts Wednesday, he won't be pitching merely to help the Rockies claim a season-opening series victory in Arizona.

He'll also be attempting to prove he belongs in the big leagues, something he is going to have to reaffirm in the minors the next two weeks if he wants to come back.

After the game, he will be sent to Class AAA Colorado Springs. The Rockies won't need a fifth starter again until April 21. They will add Matt Belisle to the bullpen instead of carrying Morales for 13 days as a fifth starter with no games to start. And then on Friday, Jason Hammel, acquired Sunday from Tampa Bay, will join the club, prompting the removal of right-hander Juan Morillo from the roster.

Morales could make a couple of starts for Colorado Spring and return for the April 21 game, also in Arizona. And then he might not. He might stay with the Sky Sox to make a few dozen starts.

It depends on how things shake down. First, Morales must pitch well on Wednesday, but also keep his focus when he pitches in the minors. If he doesn't, he will make the decision easy for the Rockies. He will open the door for Hammel to get his desired opportunity to start.

If Morales pitches up to the level of his dominating ability, the Rockies will have to re-adjust. If he keeps his edge, the Rockies can't afford to ignore him because he has the physical ability to be a left-handed answer to Ubaldo Jimenez.

The question is if he has the mental strength to carry the load, as Jimenez does. If Morales shows those signs the next two weeks, the Rockies bullpen will get juggled, again.

Glendon Rusch, who gave up two home runs in two innings of Monday's 9-8 loss to Arizona, signed a 45-day agreement, which means if the Rockies send him out in the first 45 days of the season, he'll accept the minor league assignment. Belisle could opt for free agency, but if he isn't effective, the market doesn't figure to be too much for him.

ROCKIES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 0: Ubaldo Jimenez worked seven shutout innings, and relievers Manny Corpas and Huston Street threw 10 pitches each to finish off the shutout. Troy Tulowitzki, who had never homered at Chase Field before this year, homered for the second game in a row, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead against Dan Haren in the fifth.
