Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2008-11-21

Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2008-11-21
The Rockies have trained in Tucson, Ariz., at Hi Corbett Field since they came into existence in 1993. Their future at Hi Corbett is limited, and ultimately they may leave Tucson.

The Chicago White Sox recently pulled out of that city, leaving the Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks behind. The Pima County Board of Supervisors approved the White Sox's $5 million offer to break their lease and move out of Tucson Electric Park. The White Sox will join the Los Angeles Dodgers in a new spring training facility that will open in 2009 in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale.

The Rockies' lease at Hi Corbett runs through 2011, and the Rockies have no intention of returning when their lease with the city of Tucson expires because the facility falls short of filling modern needs.

"You have to look at all your needs, because it's really a year-round facility, with not only major league spring training but extended spring training, the fall instructional program and a possible rookie league," Rockies president Keli McGregor said. "Hi Corbett is not likely to fill all of those needs, even with some improvements."

Because the departure of the White Sox leaves fewer than three clubs in Tucson, the Rockies can opt out of their lease. But that's not an option, McGregor said, because the Rockies currently have no place to go.

The Rockies have discussed building a complex northwest of Tucson in the suburb of Marana, but nothing has been decided. McGregor said for spring training to work ideally in Tucson, four clubs are needed in the area.

However, hopes for a new complex in the Tucson area suffered last year when the Arizona state legislature adjourned without forming a sports authority for the Tucson area. McGregor said he has been told it's doubtful the state of Arizona will revisit the spring training situation in Tucson because other issues will take precedence. So the Rockies are also exploring a future in the Phoenix area.

Meanwhile, the Rockies, who were the only team training in Tucson in their first five seasons, will have to revisit their past to some degree with the departure of the White Sox from Tucson. The Rockies will now have to make more bus trips of two to three hours north on Interstate 10 to the Phoenix area, where most Cactus League teams play.
