Colorado Rockies Inside Pitch 2008-09-22
The Rockies took right-hander Greg Reynolds with the second overall pick in the 2006 draft and gave the Stanford pitcher a franchise-record $3.1 million bonus.

After going 2-6 with a 6.71 ERA in 11 starts for the Rockies early this season, Reynolds, 23, went back to Class AAA Colorado Springs, where the reports were he improved in all areas. He rejoined the Rockies this month and made a scoreless one-inning relief appearance Sept. 10 at Atlanta, but he has been pounded in two subsequent starts.

Indeed, in those games, Reynolds has a 35.10 ERA, yielding 16 hits and 13 runs in 3 1/3 innings. In 62 innings this season, Reynolds has allowed 113 baserunners, an average of 16.4 per nine innings, on 83 hits, including 14 home runs, 26 walks and four batters hit by a pitch.

On Sept. 15, Reynolds gave up nine hits and seven runs in two-plus innings against San Diego, failing to retire any of the five batters he faced in the third. Seeking to rebound from that outing Sunday, Reynolds fell behind each of the first four batters he faced, gave up five runs and six hits in the first inning and left after allowing seven hits and six runs in 1 1/3 innings.

"It was more of the same, just like the last outing," Reynolds said. "I kind of got away from the game plan, crept up in the zone and got hurt."

Reynolds said he thought his problems were more a matter of focus than anything physical and that he's dwelling too much on a bad outcome and letting it affect him against the next hitter.

"Don't let them take you out of your game plan and don't try to overthrow," Reynolds said. "Sometimes I could feel myself out there, I'll give up a big hit or a hit, and I'll figure I have to throw it harder.

"That's never the case. You got to stay with the game plan and keep the ball down, and sometimes I got out of that."

DIAMONDBACKS 13, ROCKIES 4: Greg Reynolds gave up seven hits and six runs in 1 1/3 innings as the Diamondbacks blasted the Rockies in their final home game of the season and the rubber game of the series. The Rockies cut Arizona's lead to 7-3 in the fourth when Garrett Atkins hit a three-run homer, but Arizona added four runs in the fifth when SS Troy Tulowitzki let a potential double-play grounder get by him, and Chris Young tripled with the bases loaded.

The nine-run loss was the worst for the Rockies since Aug. 10, when San Diego beat them 16-7 in the Rockies debut of RHP Livan Hernandez.
