ASTROS SUMMARY How they scored
Checking in

Astros general manager Ed Wade flew into Corpus Christi to watch righthander Brandon Backe make the fourth of his five scheduled rehab starts.

"Ed went to see (Backe) up close and personal," manager Cecil Cooper said.

Backe gave up eight hits and four runs with three strikeouts over seven innings, throwing 56 of his 77 pitches for strikes for the Class AA Hooks.

Backe gave up only four hits and one run through the first six innings before giving up three runs on four hits in the seventh against Frisco.

Tossing it around

Closer Jose Valverde, on the disabled list with a strained right calf, and reliever Doug Brocail, on the DL with a torn left hamstring, are playing catch back in Houston.

"If they can continue to do that, at least you won't have to worry about them building (arm strength) back up and a lot of stuff that has to go into that," Cecil Cooper said. "That's what we're hoping."

Valverde and Brocail are working with physical therapists, trying to keep their arms strong as their leg injuries heal.

"Brocail and Valverde, I guess they both threw (Tuesday) and did fine," Cooper said. "They did their little thing standing up throwing and did OK. Even Valverde stood up and threw. Brocail can't stride and stuff, but he can stand still and throw.

"They told me earlier today when I got here that they'd both thrown and felt fine."

Keep me in, Coach

Cecil Cooper is considering giving Miguel Tejada a day off on this six-game trip, and he realizes the veteran shortstop despises days off. Tejada is likely to start today against the Rockies and perhaps get his day off during the three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field this weekend.

"He doesn't want any days off," Cooper said. "They're all like that. It's not an issue."

Cooper, who would rather not rest his stars at home, appreciates having guys like Tejada and Carlos Lee, who tend to get upset when they're not in the lineup.

"You kind of know they're not going to want to take it off," Cooper said. "Nobody's going to come up and say, ?I'm tired. I want out of there.' Nobody's going to say that.

"You've just got to pick a good day, what you think is a good day. I've had a day or so picked out, but then the guy goes out and gets three or four hits, and then there's a day off coming later. Then you go, ?Well, we'll let it ride.'?"

Coming up
