AL still has huge advantage over NL
It's quite possible that the American League will lose this week's All-Star Game. It is just one game, caught somewhere in between serious competition and silly exhibition.

No matter. This is one instance when the pre-game hype is guaranteed to be accurate, regardless of what happens in the game.

Greatest Yankee moments:

The All-Star Game (Tuesday, FOX, 7 ET) will be the last one at Yankee Stadium. As we say goodbye to the "House," Dayn Perry busts out his list of the best moments from Yankee lore. POLL: Vote for your favorite!

Major League Baseball held the Futures Game Sunday night. They ought to stick the National League in the Past Game and let the American League play the Present Game.

The American League is way, way better than the National League. This has been true for so long that we need to take a step back and realize how amazing it is. Let's see here:

  • The AL has won 10 straight All-Star Games, not counting the infamous tie in Milwaukee. Ten-game winning streaks are rare for any team — this season, only the Minnesota Twins have put one together. So to win 10 straight against another league's All-Stars is truly impressive.

  • Four of the top five records in baseball belong to AL clubs. The lone exception is the Cubs, and let's face it: When you're lone hope is the Cubs, you are basically begging me to make a Cubs joke. I'm not even going to bother. You get the point.

  • Eleven of the 14 AL clubs had winning records in interleague play. Only three of the 16 NL clubs had winning records against the AL. The three NL division leaders (Philadelphia, Chicago and Arizona) were a combined 16-29 against the AL.

  • Last year's Rockies won 21 of 22 games in September and October, then got swept in the World Series.

OK, so you get it: The AL is better. The question, then, is why.

This is going to sound crazy, since we're talking about pro sports here, but money has a lot to do with it. Five of the top six payrolls in baseball belong to AL teams. Obviously, the more you spend, the better chance you have to win. But the money provides another boost to the quality of play in the AL — teams know they can't sneak into the playoffs with 85 wins. That creates a higher standard for AL teams to live up to, so even the lower-payroll teams in that league have to be more creative just to compete.

Winning begets winning. An NL team can win a weak division and fool itself into thinking it's a powerhouse in the making. An AL team with the same record knows it must improve, and general managers react accordingly.

And of course, there is the DH. Generally, baseball fans are either DH Guys or No DH Guys. (And women can be DH Guys, too. I believe "guy" is gender-neutral.) DH Guys would rather eat pickled human than watch pitchers hit. Me, I'm a No DH Guy. I'll gladly watch a pitcher flail at a few curveballs in exchange for more complicated strategical options later in the game.

But there is no arguing that the DH has helped the AL. It gives AL teams a chance to plug a top offensive player into the lineup without any worries about defensive liabilities. It is the equivalent of an NBA Western Conference team putting Carmelo Anthony on the floor and saying he doesn't have to play any defense. Oh, right. That actually happens. But at least the Nuggets pay a price for it.

The NL might win this All-Star Game. The NL representative might even win the World Series. But neither of those results would change the obvious fact: the AL is better, period.
